YOUR SMILE

for my sister, Lillian Marie J. Vistal

I look for you everywhere
even in unfamiliar places
I make sure I smile so that
when I get the chance to see your face
you would smile back at me.

MY SUNRISE AND YOUR BENCH

Today,
I wait for the sunrise
on the bench on the side
the exact place we once occupied.

It was half-past five then
when we started our walk, my friend
down the nostalgic K of C Promenade
while joggers busily parade.

The sea was glistening and calm
of laughter, arguments and stories
Me, staring at my sunrise
You, sitting on your bench.

MISSING YOU AT 21

Our summers with Papa Tito were spent swimming here.
Twenty-one years
it has been
and I still cry
I still ask why

Not that I never
understood your leaving
But, it took me years
to grasp your passing

The pain is still here
it never left
it still feels
like yesterday.

I wrote this for my father, Tito P. Vistal, and for every loved one who passed away.

BLUE

ALMIRA Diving Resort, Napaling Point, Tangnan, Panglao, Bohol

alone in his paddle boat
a fisherman passes by

wondering what time
he can bring home
a kilo of fish
for his family of six.

LETTERS

Your letters are still on the box
I stored them in plastic
just so they won't rot

It's been 17 years since
I wrote back and said
the feelings I felt and kept

Three years through letters
meant everything to us
two happy souls who loved

You wanted to see me home
and asked for my hand
you scared me then and I left off

Remembering you now
and the happy moments we had
makes me realize one thing

I let go of the man who
made me believed that love
was beyond years and regret.
